The scheme is open to:

people with keyboard skills but no knowledge of
playing the organ |

people who once played the organ but need to refresh
their memory |

those who had some organ lessons but want to improve
their basic skills and confidence |
What can the scheme offer?

the professional advice and encouragement of an
experienced and helpful Assessor, together with formal assessments at
each stage of the syllabus |

a certificate to those who successfully pass an
assessment at any stage |

advice in finding a regular organ teacher |
 |
Workshops and events several times a year - a
friendly, sympathetic environment, giving an excellent opportunity to
learn and ask questions. |
What is the cost?

to register with the scheme - a single payment of £15
(£10 for RSCM affiliates and individual members). |

Stage 1: £25

Stage 3: £40
paid direct to the assessor. (Some churches may make a small
charge for use of their facilities.) |

for workshops:
A modest charge is made for workshops (also open to people who are not
on the scheme but members are given a discount) |

Naturally, individual organ lessons are an additional
cost, paid directly to your teacher. |
What do I learn at each stage?
At each stage you will learn new skills and vital
techniques.

Stage 1 includes
hymn, song, psalm and canticle accompaniment
choosing simple voluntaries
effective use of organ stops
basic music theory and layout of the organ |

Stage 2 continues Stage 1 and includes:
providing suitable introductions and musical links
accompanying simple anthems and service settings
how to accompany more involved psalms and canticles
developing your pedal technique
choosing suitable music for worship |

Stage 3 continues Stage 2 and includes:
more stylistic playing
accompanying full musical settings of hymns and songs
developing the art of appropriate and colourful accompaniments of psalms
and canticles
understanding the technique of accompanying an anthem
improving sight-reading skills from three staves
increasing your repertoire of organ voluntaries
understanding performance methods and the range of music used in worship |
What do the assessors do?
The assessors for the scheme cover the whole of Sussex. Some
may be able to offer organ lessons on a regular basis, while others prefer
to offer consultations from time to time. There are also other
organ teachers who can give lessons on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly
basis.
How do I join the scheme?
Just complete and submit the form below. The Scheme Administrator
will contact you to find out how you would like to use the scheme, to
answer any questions you may have (including helping you to find a
suitable organ teacher). |
